0:40
and the bottoms 14 foreground
0:42
don’t worry if you can’t manage to sit in this posture many of his card
0:48
this is for half Lotus posture you can see here but the right focus place on
0:54
the left by our alternatively the left foot is placed on the right by this is
0:59
also a very stable posture for the practice of zazen
1:02
this is the quarter notice here the right foot to left foot is placed on the
1:11
caf
1:12
this is commonly called the Burmese posture where one foot is placed in
1:19
front of the opposing leg a lot of Western practitioners of zazen are able
1:25
to sit in this cross legged posture in all cross-legged postures
1:31
it’s important to switch for legs out in order to maintain symmetry in the body
1:36
for instance if you said to half Lotus with the left foot up on the right five
1:40
alternate you’re sitting . by placing the right foot up on the left by a
1:46
popular alternative to cross legged postures
1:50
this is the kneeling position are also known as sazar a practitioner can use a
1:56
bench or a cushion to achieve this posture so as an can certainly be
2:03
practiced in a chair extra care should be taken to be sure that the feet are
2:08
firmly planted on the ground and also that you don’t slump
2:12
especially in the lower back for the regular practice of zazen
2:17
it is very helpful to set up a permanent spot for your practice
2:22
this should be in an area where you are unlikely to be disturbed for your
2:26
periods of meditation the matter the cushion can remain in the same place
2:32
perhaps you would like to set up an altar many people like to use a Buddha
2:36
figure have two parts of flowers or anything that you consider sacred when
2:43
beginning the practice of zazen
 zen-meditation-for-beginners
2:45
it’s very helpful to begin with a checklist
2:48
we want to make sure that we can maintain a comfortable and stable
2:52
posture before beginning the practice of zazen be sure that you are wearing
2:58
comfort
2:58
all clothing and arrange your cushion on the mat arrange your legs
3:05
even the full Lotus posture half Lotus quarter
3:09
burmese kneeling or sitting in a chair
3:13
we can begin by straightening the spine a way to achieve this is to sway gently
3:19
from side to side and then come back to Center . take a breath in filling the
3:25
chest with air and pulling for spine straight you’ll notice about a straight
3:29
spine actually curves in at the lower back
3:32
please be sure not to slum or over arch forward
3:36
the head should be straight not tipping from side to side and also not leaning
3:46
forward the gym should be talked down slightly
3:50
a very common question that people have when beginning the practice of zazen are
3:59
seated meditation is what do I do with the eyes in the practice of zazen we sit
4:05
neither with eyes fully closed which content to bring on a dreamy State all
4:12
to help from fully open as we can be distracted by our environment
4:16
experiments with having your eyes half-closed cast downward at a 45 degree
4:23
angle you can try to bring a soft focus into the eyes
4:28
so you’re not staring at anything in particular the mouth should be lightly
4:32
close the tongue can rest against the back of the front teeth
4:36
this creates a slight vacuum which really helps with not producing a lot of
4:41
saliva where I was sitting
4:42
this is the cosmic mudra you can see here the right hand is placed , with the
4:50
left hand laid in the right part forms are asked over and lightly touching
4:57
it’s very important to make sure your body is arranged the way you wanted to
5:01
be for the whole . the desires air
5:03
try not to move around unless you absolutely need to
5:07
if you do need to move
5:08
do it quickly and quietly it’s better to maintain stillness for of the period as
5:13
much as possible when ending a period of zazen
5:18
please take care to be gentle with the body
5:22
you can begin by swaying likely from side to side notice any pins and needles
5:28
are dull ache or pain in the leg and then take extra care to move very slowly
5:33
before standing
5:37
how do we work with a breath during the practice of zazen
5:41
well we don’t try and make the braf do anything in particular
5:46
the breath will naturally lengthen and soften during meditation but as a
5:52
guiding rule we let the breath really do what it wants to do
5:55
beginners to Zen practice and the practice of zazen often start with
6:01
breathing practices to focus on during the sittings
6:05
the first of these practices very common is to count the breath
6:10
how do we do that well encounter the breath we do just that but on the
6:15
exhalation only for example we would inhale and then inwardly as we exhale we
6:22
count the number one for the next inhalation and the next exhalation we
6:30
count the number 2 and so on
6:32
free for all the way to 10 when we get to 10 we stop and come back to one
6:37
if we find that perhaps we’re on number 25
6:41
then don’t worry just come back to wall also if we forget what your number that
6:46
we’re counting
6:47
we just begin again at one the practice of zazen we usually breathe in and out
6:54
through the nose
6:56
the only time when this would change would be a Power nose is blocked
7:00
if that should happen then it’s okay for us your period – just breathe through my
7:05
mouth
7:05
if we have a cold or a runny nose then it’s fine to keep the tissue in your
7:10
hand and to establish your nose as needed
7:14
